Choosing the Right Red Hair Color for You

Looking to try out red locks but aren’t sure what shade is right for you?

Keep in mind it’s important to choose a shade of red that matches with your style and skin tone.  You should choose a red with the same undertones as your skin to stay looking your best.

Working with your hair’s natural pigments will always best complement your natural skin tone.

For Cool Skin Tones:

  • For cool skin tones, you should go for intense shades of red. You can pull off the more wild hair colors such as bright red and burgundy.
  •  Those with cool skin tones should stay away from ‘warm’ red colors such as bronze or red colors with gold or yellow bases. These can wash out your skin and make you look sallow.

For Warm Skin Tones:

  • Someone with warm skin tones will look best with warm shades of red. Try a rich auburn, mahogany, or red colors with a golden base to them.
  • Those with warm skin tones should stay away from bright reds that may wash out your color.  Stick with the rich red colors.

Now let’s talk about some variations within the warm and cool skin tones!

For Light Skin Tones:

  • Fair skin looks best with a light, golden, strawberry blonde to a bright copper or red. Avoid wine-colored reds and burgundy shades because these colors will make you look too pale.

For Medium Skin Tones:

  • Medium skin has more pigments therefore your hair can too. Choose a medium coppery blonde to medium auburn shade. Just steer clear of dark eggplant colors as these shades will make your skin appear yellow.

For Dark Skin Tones:

  • Darker skin tones look gorgeous with a medium auburn to chestnut brown shade. Super red hues, however, have too much blue in them and will make you look green, so be careful there
