How to Subtly Darken Your Hair for Winter

Winter is right around the corner and with it comes holidays, cold weather, and cozy days.

Another thing that comes with winter is the undeniable urge to darken our hair color. Whether due to the shorter days, your hair getting too sun-bleached during the summer, or the insatiable need for all things warm and rich, ’tis the season for darker hair.

But what do you do if you don’t want to drastically change your hair color?

Well, here are some great ideas for a soft, subtle change…

For Blondes

Try an all-over “Glaze.” A Glaze is a semi-permanent color treatment that goes by many names ( Cellophane treatment, A Gloss, Toner, to name a few).

This is great for warming up your existing blonde, just keep it within 2 shades of your current color. It’s very soft and should add a lot of shine.

It washes out in about 6-8 weeks, so it’s great if you’re scared of hair color commitment.

Add low-lights blended in with your existing blonde. To deepen this look further, add a before-mentioned Glaze to the blonde that wasn’t low-lighted.

For a bolder look (and my personal favorite), pick a color 2-3 shades darker than your blonde, and have the entire bottom and top sections of your hair covered with it. Keep most of the blonde in the middle “halo” section of your head (ear to ear) just adding low-lights.

For Brunettes

Glazes are great options for Brunettes as well. Just remember- keep it within 2-3 shades darker than your existing color.

Darker hair tends to get very warm with red and copper tones when the sun lightens it. To counterbalance this, ask to have cooler tones added to your new, deeper color.

Ask your stylist about the newest color-blocking techniques. This is a great way to strategically place customized sections of darker color in your hair. Think on the bottom, sides, or even in your fringe.

If your feeling extra sassy, think about trying out red, auburn tones. Either all-over or softly faded into the ends.

Hopefully, this gave you some inspiration to help you jazz up what could be a dreary time of the year.
