Summertime: What to Do With Your Bangs?
Ah, summertime, what’s not to love?
Well, if you’re like me, one major thing that I don’t love about summertime is the effect it has on my bangs.
There’s nothing worse than spending time in the morning, styling your bangs (whether side swept or strait-across) until they are smooth and perfect, only to walk outside and have it all ruined.
All it takes is a little exposure from the heat and humidity of the season, or the tiniest bit of sweat on your forehead, to turn your beautiful bangs into a frizzy mess.
But don’t fret, I have some amazing tips that are quick and easy to help get you, your bangs, and your sanity though our favorite season…
1 rule of the season is to always have a couple of bobby pins in your purse/car
Now for a brief bobby pin tutorial
This is the proper way to lock in bobby pins, and should be used for all of the following styles…
Fasten the first bobby pin to the hair in an upward direction. Then, fasten a second bobby pin in a downward position, locking it onto the hair and the first pin. The outcome should be an X that will hold your hair, even if you shake your head vigorously from side to side.
The fastest, easiest solution (and my personal fav), is to part your hair far to one side and separate your bangs.
Next, simply start on the side where your part sits, and twist your bangs back off your face, while still moving off to the opposite side. Once you reach the end of your fringe area, secure it with your bobby pins.
If you want to unleash your inner Greek Goddess, then follow the same procedure as the first style, but instead of twisting try French braiding your bangs.
Don’t know how to French braid? You can always ask your hair stylist or friend to teach you, or even YouTube it (you can learn anything on the internet).
Another great solution is a small, classy fringe bump (we’re not talking a Snookie-style bump).
Once again, separate your bangs from the rest of your hair, and using a soft bristled brush, tease sub sections of your bangs.
Start in the front, using horizontal sections, each section about as tick as your pinky finger. At this point all of the hair you teased should be standing straight up.
Now start lightly brushing the hair down and back, make sure to only skim the surface with the brush, otherwise you’ll brush out all of that teasing you just accomplished.
Pinch the ends of your section and decide how big of a bump you’d like. The more forward you push it, the bigger it gets. Once you’ve got it where you want it, pin it, using your sweet, new bobby pinning skills.
Alright, now that we’re feeling confident and bold, you can try something a little edgier.
A pony tail with a lot of volume on top and slicked back sides. You’re going to tease the entire top of your head, following the same steps as the fringe bump (line up your section with your eyebrow arches, and extending back to the top curve of your head).
Remember, horizontal sections as wide as your pinky, and the same soft bristled brush. Now that you look like a maniac with the roots of your hair standing up, start gently brushing it back-remember only skim the surface.
Gather all of your hair into a pony tail, take your brush and smooth the sides and bottom, and secure it with a hair tie. Start gently tugging the front of your hair (not completely out of the pony tail) until desired volume is reached.
If you have shorter bangs, just blend them back as best as you can, and spray with hairspray, lots of hairspray. You can watch me successfully achieve this look, while teaching you step-by-step on our Salon Cartier YouTube channel.
All of these styles should be finished with a hairspray – my favorite is the medium hold by Neuma.
